Mary seems to be getting over what we hope is the last of
her infections. Her immune system is still quite low so we have been trying to be careful about who and what she comes into contact with. Those visiting her thought she looked a little perkier and has
been able to stay awake longer and be a little more interested in what is going
on around her. This may also be that she has taken a surprising interest in the
Olympics (as we all have?).
Tomorrow Mary is having a tiny camera put down her throat.
This is not just because of her general longstanding commitment to media and freedom
of information. The camera will help doctors see whether as they continue to
try and wean Mary off the tracheotomy and hopefully ascertain that there is no
reason why she wouldn’t be able to breathe properly on her own. It may also help shed some light on why she keeps getting the chest infections, as her smoking habit is now long gone...
A few people have been in contact about visiting Mary. If you
are a good friend of Mary’s, lurgy free and able to get to Putney this summer,
you are welcome to email me in the next week or so and we can try and sort out a time for you to visit (after that my life will be slightly interrupted by a newborn). Generally
visiting is between 12-8pm although before 2.30/3pm on weekdays can sometimes
clash with her therapies.
If you are stuck for ideas when visiting, you can help Mary
build on arm muscles to help her with the impending baby cuddling duties. Alternatively Mary
likes being read to, a wheel about the grounds in her wheelchair or to lie in
bed listening to an eclectic mix of music. (Depending on your relationship with
Mary she sometimes likes a little hand moisturise and massage, but don't push it). As usual, if
Mary’s fast asleep, she doesn’t like being woken up, you have been warned….
