Kaya passed on to me some of Mary’s belongings from her desk
at The Times this week. It had stood,
I believe, as a sort of monument to Mary, no one had yet touched it. But the
time came to clear away her things, to add to the lovely stash I, Ginny, my Dad
and the Marillac take care of between us.
Amongst this treasure we discovered; a half bottle of wine,
two pairs of high heels (definitely party heels), dodgy Brazilian liquor, one
pair of boots – well past a trip to Timpsons, a million notebooks (apparently
it’s a journalist thing), song lyrics, lots of thankyou cards/ notes from
friends and a toy spider.
Some of these items Mary will never be re-united with - the
half bottle of wine was well past it. Others we hope she will enjoy one day,
bit by bit, beginning with some lovely postcards from friends which are now on
her wardrobe, and one she had got herself - ‘Everything is going to be Alright’
projected on the Tate Britain.
