Wikipedia don't know everything... the therapeutic qualities of chocolate! A post from Liz...

You may already have seen it, but we found a Wikipedia page devoted to the Marvellous Mary this week.  Given that most of us were  in awe of Mary, having like her dad, a brain the size of the universe, it's fitting that having digested encyclopaedias she is officially an entry in one. I think she'd be pleased.
When Mary was at Cambridge I used to post her parcels of champagne truffles around exam time. Ever since those dark days we spent at the Royal London Hospital with Mary fighting for her life, I've been promising Mary chocolate or even better champagne truffles as I know the therapeutic effect they have on her.
Of course,  when it came to birthday cake last week, it had to be  triple chocolate. Mary has to be fed through her tummy as she has a poor swallow reflex.  This means she would be in danger of choking and so up until now she's had to make do with  being smothered in all things chocolate:  chocolate lip balm, chocolate body lotion and chocolate hand cream.  But at her birthday gathering, I smeared a little of the soft chocolately icing on the inside of Mary's mouth and lips (nothing enough to risk aspiration) and by the time we wheeled her back to her room  the chocolatey  icing was gone!  I swear I saw her licking her lips. Another first for Mary.

Now the weather is warming up, Mary's dad and I will be buying a table and some chairs for the balcony outside Mary's room so she will be able to entertain you there when you visit.

  1. Dear Laura, Thank you for keeping us up to date with Mary's progress.
Although we have never been to visit or sent a card she is in our heart every day.
Every day when I put my helmet on my head, and push my bike onto the road I think about Mary. I am all too often reminded of how many vehicles still have no respect for cyclists who are trying to make their way safely from one destination to another.
We read, with joy the ups of Mary's journey. We read with sadness, hopes and prayers the difficult journies.
Mary is always in our prayers, as are you all.
Sending a belated Happy Birthday dear Mary. Aoife and family. xxxx
